ISpeakHipHop sat down with artist/producer and one of MTV Base’s Top 5 Trappers for 2017, Zoocci Coke Dope. We discussed his new deal with VthSeason, how he feels about being classified as a ‘trapper’ and more. At just 23 Zoocci is a rising star and slowly climbing the SA Hip Hop ladder. He dropped an EP this year titled “Morning Star” and had features in the EP that included the likes of Stogie T, Kid X, A-Reece and Ginger Trill. He’s also lent his vocals and production services to artists such as Big Star Johnson, J Smash, Ex Global and DJ Speedsta among others. But believe it or not hip-hop was not the Pretoria North Boy’s first love. Zoocci’s discovered or should we say hip-hop found him by chance.
Zoocci “: I Started making beats in primary school and I also was a Lil Wayne fan at that time,Luckily enough I grew up around people who were making music and accidentally one of the guys gave me a compilation of hip hop music including a musical software installation file Fruity Loops Studio and that’s when everything started.”
ISHH : Briefly take us through the beginning of your musical journey?
Zoocci : I Started in Primary School with a Fruity Loops Installation file, I started making music and I haven’t stop since. All I did was produce and learn as much as I could about production. I was In studio as early as 8 am.I Studied sound Engineering for a year but had to dropped out due to finances and because I also found myself doing more school work than making Music.
ISHH: And Rap?
ZOOCCI: Lil Wayne was my biggest influence .For me producing was not enough .Back in 2010 Lil Wayne was the artist that I enjoyed the most .I would listen to ‘Da Drought 3‘the production and lyrics and Try to rap along .If I did not have that Mixtape, I would Probably be just making Beats.
ISHH ; The Journey in Music is no joke ,only a few can make a career from it , what got you through and How hard was it ?
ZOOCCI ; Hunger got me through . I wanted to show people how good I am at making music and mostly to myself that this was my craft .I also had to prove what i was saying to My mom when i dropped out of school and moved out .Not to go back Home, until I made that money ,not To ask for anything .My Mom understood it, because I am a self driven person . The journey was not easy and it’s still not easy, just less harder .I had no place to stay sometime and had to stay with different friends.my mom offered to take me back Home once and I was tempted but could not .I needed to turn my word into action .
ISHH: How did it feel to be included in MTV Base’s top 5 Trappers in SA for 2017, as well as becoming the freshman everyone has their eye on.
Zoocci : It feels good that people are now more than ever noticing my craft and welcoming me into the industry. Some things have changed, more people recognize me in the mall but that’s about it. Other than that I keep myself in the studio . About being considered a trap artist, I don’t feel that I am one. Personally, I don’t like to be put in a box like that. I liked the exposure but did not like being classified as a trapper. I dont feel like I make trap when I make music.
I strongly believe I do music in general, it’s my sound, not Trap music and I don’t represent trap at all. I do Hip-Hop.
ISHH : Why did you sign with Vth season, especially at a time when most artists are going independent and after The Hustle season 2 winner ‘Flex Rabayeezy’ rejected the Vth season management prize deal?
Zoocci :As an Indie Artist, I needed some muscle back to push my career and that’s why I chose to sign with Vthseason so I can give my career a boost to another level. There are certain things that require you to have the right people around you. Artists have different needs and goals. Currently my goal is aligned with Vth Season’s. I don’t know Flex personally and I heard about him turning down the Vth season management deal and maybe that was for him. I just don’t understand why you would turn a prize winning deal, if you knew it was part of the grand prize. I like the offer that Vthseason offered me. I know that , If you’re going to reject an offer it has to make sense for you.
ISHH : how did the single , Pablo with BigStar come about?
Zoocci: I had that beat , for a while and was constantly working on it. I presented it to Big Star since we’ve previously worked together on other project and the rest was history.
ISHH: What’s the next single people can expect from you?
Zoocci : All Night Long with A-Reece.
ISHH : Your EP is very personal, can you tell us more about it.
Zoocci: One thing about me is that, what you hear on the EP is me. It’s exactly what I was going through at the time. My music reflects me and my journey as an artist. I try my best to keep it as real as possible. The Title for example “Morning Star” that’s Lucifer name and Jesus was referred to with the same name .I have always been an over thinker , one side i think i should relax , calm down and all is OK ,not to overwork or think, the other side I’m confused and under pressure. so the Titled or EP is the confusion and Battle I experienced within me .
ISHH : When did you start to feel, that the industry officially accepted you or welcomed you?
Zoocci : While working on my EP and looking for verses I started feeling like the industry had started to welcome me. I remember Stogie T, going into metro FM radio and saying he wanted to work with me that made me feel more welcomed and a few of the artists I worked with contributing their verse on my EP.
ISHH : Whats next?
Zoocci :I’m currently, putting together some visual for my EP and other projects I’ve been on. I no longer have as much time as I do to produce or write. Now I need to market, talk to the media, socialise and make sure my art stays relevant and in the process, not lose my love and Hunger for music.
ISHH : in 20 second , Tell us some personal things that people don’t know about you

• I love Biltong
• I’m a big fan of LeBron James
• I love ice tea
